The event may be over.
You may understand what happened and know that you cannot change the past.
Yet something about it still feels active.
A memory, reminder, conversation or similar situation can bring the old response back as though part of you is still dealing with what happened.
The Past Can Be Over While The Response Continues
An event does not have to be happening now for the meaning attached to it to keep influencing the present.
You may carry an expectation about yourself, other people or what is likely to happen next.
That expectation can shape attention, decisions and emotional responses long after the original situation has ended.
What May Be Maintaining The Connection
A repeating sequence may involve:
- a reminder of the past appears;
- the old meaning or expectation becomes active;
- you experience the present through that expectation;
- thoughts and decisions organise around avoiding a repeat;
- the resulting response keeps the old event psychologically relevant;
- future reminders reactivate the same sequence.
Letting go may therefore be less about forcing yourself to forget and more about changing the way the old event continues to organise present responses.
You Do Not Have To Erase What Happened
Moving forward does not require pretending the event was unimportant.
It does not require approving of what happened or denying its consequences.
The useful distinction is between remembering an event and continuing to respond as though the same event is still controlling what happens now.
From Change And Becoming Toward Movement
You can explore the wider territory at Change & Becoming.
If one past event or repeated memory is continuing to shape how you feel or respond now, Direct Change Work can focus on the specific perception, expectation or strategy maintaining that connection.
The aim is not to change history. It is to change what the history is still doing in the present.
Choose How You Would Like To Begin
If you have a specific problem you want to move beyond, you can begin with a one-to-one Direct Change Work session.
If you would rather discuss the situation first, you can learn more through a Clarity Call.
Letting go does not have to mean forgetting. It can mean no longer needing the past to organise the same response today.
