Helping You Change What Is No Longer Working
Most people do not seek help because they want to spend months analysing themselves.
They seek help because something is affecting their life and they want it to change.
It may be a fear that keeps returning.
A decision they cannot seem to make.
A pattern they understand but still repeat.
A loss of confidence.
A habit of overthinking, avoiding, pleasing others, or holding themselves back.
My work begins with a simple question.
What would you like to be different?
From there, we work directly with the issue that brought you.
A Background In Education And Individual Change
My name is Graham Marcelis.
I am a Direct Change Worker and the founder of Brightening Futures.
Before developing this work, I spent many years as a public-school educator.
Teaching was never simply a matter of presenting information.
Every individual learned differently.
Some people responded immediately.
Some needed another explanation.
Some understood the subject but lacked confidence.
Some appeared unwilling when they were actually uncertain, overwhelmed, embarrassed, or afraid of getting something wrong.
Others had developed ways of avoiding situations that made them feel exposed.
Working effectively meant noticing these differences.
It meant recognising how each individual processed information, what captured their attention, where understanding became blocked, and what helped them adapt to a new idea, challenge, or circumstance.
It also meant understanding that repeating the same explanation more forcefully rarely helps when the real obstacle has not been identified.
That experience continues to shape the way I work today.
Looking Beyond The Visible Difficulty
A person’s immediate difficulty is not always the whole problem.
Someone may appear unmotivated when they are afraid of failing.
They may appear indecisive when every available choice seems to carry an unwanted consequence.
They may understand what needs to change while still feeling unable to act differently.
They may describe themselves as lacking confidence when the difficulty is limited to a particular situation or relationship.
As an educator, I learned to look beyond the first explanation.
I learned to notice how people interpreted situations, how they responded when circumstances changed, and what prevented existing ability from becoming available when it was needed.
The aim was not to judge the person.
It was to understand what was interfering with learning, adaptation, confidence, or action.
Direct Change Work develops this same principle in a more focused way.
We look at what is happening, what may be maintaining it, and where a useful change can begin.
An Engineering Approach To Problem-Solving
Before working in education, I trained and worked as an electro-mechanical engineer.
Engineering taught me a different but complementary way of thinking.
When something was not working, the visible symptom did not automatically reveal the cause.
A fault in one part of a system could appear somewhere else entirely.
Effective fault-finding required observation, careful questioning, testing assumptions, and understanding the relationships between different parts of the system.
Replacing the most obvious component was not always the answer.
You first had to discover what was actually producing the problem.
I do not treat people like machines.
People are far more complex, responsive, and individual.
However, the discipline of looking beneath an apparent symptom remains valuable.
It supports my educational experience by helping me distinguish between what a person is experiencing and the process that may be keeping that experience in place.
A Direct Approach To Change
I help people identify what is keeping a specific problem in place and create movement where thinking alone has not been enough.
The work is focused, conversational, and practical.
You do not need to arrive with a complete explanation of yourself.
You do not need to tell your entire life story.
You do not need to commit to a long programme before knowing whether the approach is right for you.
We begin with what is happening now, how it is affecting you, and what you would like to change.
Why Understanding Is Not Always Enough
Many people already understand a great deal about their difficulty.
They may know where it began.
They may recognise the pattern.
They may understand that a fear is unnecessary.
They may know what decision they need to make.
They may be fully aware that a particular behaviour is no longer helping them.
Yet the response continues.
This does not necessarily mean that they have failed to understand themselves.
It may mean that the difficulty is being maintained at a level that explanation alone has not changed.
A different question, distinction, experience, or intervention may be needed.
My role is not to provide an elaborate theory about who you are.
It is to help you notice what has been overlooked and find the point where movement becomes possible.
Conversational Hypnotherapy
Conversational hypnotherapy is one of the principal methods I use.
It does not require you to become unconscious, surrender control, or behave in an unusual way.
You remain present throughout the conversation.
The work uses focused attention, language, imagination, reflection, and carefully directed questions to help you relate differently to the problem.
You may know that a fear is unnecessary and still feel it.
You may know what decision you need to make and still remain unable to make it.
You may recognise a repeating pattern and still find yourself entering it again.
The purpose of the work is not merely to provide more explanation.
It is to help something change in the way the problem is experienced and maintained.
What Working With Me Is Like
You can expect a calm, focused conversation.
I will listen carefully, but I will also ask direct questions.
I may invite you to notice distinctions that have previously been overlooked.
I may challenge an assumption when it appears to be keeping the problem in place.
I will not tell you who you should become or impose a ready-made interpretation of your life.
The aim is to help you regain choice, clarity, and movement.
A session is not a performance.
There is no need to provide the correct answer.
There is no expectation that you should already understand why the problem exists.
You only need to begin with an honest description of what is happening and what you would prefer instead.
A Focused Session
My work is designed for people who want help with a clearly identified issue.
This may include fear or anxiety connected to a particular situation.
It may involve procrastination or avoidance.
It may concern people pleasing or difficulty saying no.
It may be a repeating relationship or behavioural pattern.
It may involve confidence, self-doubt, an important decision, or an emotional response that no longer feels useful.
Each person and situation is different.
For some people, one focused session creates the movement they need.
Others may decide that further work would be helpful.
There is no expectation that you must enter long-term therapy or continue beyond what feels useful.
Training And Experience
My professional development includes training as an NLP Master Practitioner, NLP therapist, hypnotherapist, wellbeing coach, and life coach.
This training is supported by my earlier experience in education, engineering, practical work, photography, and personal development.
Education taught me to recognise individual difference, barriers to learning, and the many ways people respond to uncertainty and change.
Engineering taught me disciplined observation, fault-finding, and the importance of identifying the process beneath the visible symptom.
Working across different environments has taught me not to assume that every person needs the same explanation or the same intervention.
Training provides methods and structure.
Experience helps determine when to use them, when to remain curious, and when not to force an interpretation.
Who This Work Is For
This work may suit you when you can identify something specific that you would like to change.
You may already have thought deeply about the issue.
You may understand where it came from.
You may have tried reasoning with yourself, pushing through it, ignoring it, or waiting for it to disappear.
Yet the same response continues.
You do not need to be in crisis.
You may simply have reached the point where you are no longer willing to let the issue keep directing your choices.
Who This Work Is Not For
Direct Change Work is not a substitute for emergency, psychiatric, or specialist medical care.
It may not be appropriate when someone requires ongoing clinical support, crisis intervention, diagnosis, or treatment for a serious mental health condition.
I do not diagnose medical or psychological conditions.
Where another form of support appears more appropriate, I will say so.
Online And In-Person Sessions
Sessions are available online throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.
In-person sessions may also be available in London.
Online work allows you to participate from a private and familiar environment.
The quality of the work depends more upon the conversation and your engagement than upon being physically present in the same room.
Begin With The Issue
You do not need to decide whether your difficulty is serious enough.
You do not need to know which method will be used.
You do not need to prepare a detailed account of your past.
Begin with the issue as you currently experience it.
What keeps happening?
How is it affecting you?
What would become possible if it changed?
